What custom folding cartons really cost, from the people who print them
Most packaging vendors hide pricing because their number includes a broker margin. We own the presses, so we can explain exactly what moves a carton quote up or down, and what to send us for a real number within one business day.
What moves the price
1.Quantity: the biggest lever
Setup (plates, make-ready, die) is a fixed cost spread across your run. A run of 5,000 cartons costs far less per unit than 500, because the same setup is divided over ten times more boxes. This is why unit price drops sharply at higher quantities.
2.Size and style of the carton
A larger carton uses more board and fits fewer units per press sheet. Structure matters too: a straight tuck end is simpler to cut and glue than an auto-bottom or a carton with windows, inserts, or unusual locking features.
3.Board grade and thickness
Heavier board protects more and feels more premium, but costs more per sheet. The right caliper depends on what the carton holds and how it ships. We print on FSC certified stock (FSC C103925), and we'll recommend the lightest board that still does the job.
4.Colours and coverage
Standard four-colour process printing is the baseline. Add spot colours, metallic inks, or heavy solid coverage and plate count and press time go up. Printing inside the carton as well as outside also adds a pass.
5.Finishes and embellishments
Aqueous coating is economical. Soft-touch lamination, spot UV, foil stamping, and embossing each add real cost because they add real equipment time. They also sell product, so the question is which finish earns its keep on your shelf.
6.The cutting die: one-time, then free
A new carton structure needs a cutting die, a one-time tooling cost. Reorders of the same structure reuse it, which is one reason a reorder is cheaper than a first order and why standard structures cost less than fully custom ones.
7.Who you buy from
A broker or platform resells a manufacturer's work with a margin on top. Buying direct from the plant removes that layer. It's the one cost factor that has nothing to do with your carton, and you control it completely.

A standard tuck-end or auto-bottom adapted to your dimensions skips structural engineering and often reuses die logic. Save the fully custom structure for when the product demands it.
Spend the finish budget where it shows
One well-placed embellishment on the front panel usually outsells foil everywhere. We'll tell you which finish earns its cost and which one you're paying for out of habit.

- We quote short runs honestly: below a certain quantity, setup makes the unit price high and we'll tell you so rather than hide it. Send your real quantity and we'll show you the math, including whether a slightly larger run costs barely more.
- Does a reorder cost less than the first order?
- Usually yes. The cutting die exists, the structure is proven, and the file is press-ready, so you skip most one-time costs. Same plant, same colour, lower setup.
- Can US companies get pricing in US dollars?
- Yes. We price in Canadian dollars, which a favourable exchange rate makes attractive for a US budget, and we accept payment in USD. Many cartons cross the border duty-free or at low duty under CUSMA.
